DEAR JANE B8 AND B9

 I've made two more Dear Jane blocks.  And again, they were challenging.

The center four pieces were fussy-cut and sewn together, then the corners were added with a Y-seam.

I added the appliqued leaves later.

This block was also fussy-cut and entailed Y-seams.

MAKING MORE COGS

I got the other two arcs of the 14" cogs made and started on the black 7" arcs for the little quilt I'm working on.  I got all 4 of them made while visiting with the Brave Patch Friday group.  These are not sewn together yet.

I hesitated at this point because I'm not sure what color cogs to put in the center part.  The Mickey Mouse fabric has only red, black, white and a little light grey.  I'm thinking about adding another color.

 

LITTLE QUILT STARTED

 I enjoyed making the Cogs so much I decided to use the Mickey Mouse fabric I just purchased to make a little quilt made up of the Cogs.  I'm challenging myself to make all three sizes.  I started with the 14" arcs.  And the red fabric I used needed to be fussy-cut to get the pattern all  oriented the same way in each cog.

I got a good start:

CAUGHT UP

I got the Splendid Sampler blocks from the last few weeks done.

RED CIRCLES

I've been calling them red, but now that I'm working with the fabric, it isn't really red.  It's more of a tomato color - orangish red.  Whatever it is, I made the circles that will be appliqued into the center of each wedge circle.

I cut out the proper sized circle from heat-resistant template plastic, traced it onto the back of the tomato fabric and cut out nine circles with a generous seam allowance.

I then hand stitch a basting stitch around the outside, keeping the stitches as close together as possible [it makes the circle smoother].  With the template plastic on the inside, I drew the basting thread tight causing the seam allowance to fold over onto the back.  Then iron it, and remove the plastic circle.

Easy-peasy.

After lunch at Coastline Burgers in the Junction I made a few more blocks of the Putty and Mortar quilt and cut out the rest of the pieces.  [Sorry, I didn't take pictures].

Then I made a few more City Sampler Blocks - 46 and 47.  The Challenge has begun on Instagram, today was Day 2.   So far I've been keeping up!

WORKING ON 41

Here is block 41 Sew South from the Splendid Sampler.


I wanted to fussy cut the motif for each hexie, so I made a little window using the large hexie.
I traced around the medium hexie and cut out the hole.  Using part of a Ziploc baggie, I taped the plastic to the large hexie over the cutout.


Then I arranged it over the motif, using a pen, I traced the pattern onto the plastic, then traced around the outside of the large hexie - which would be the cut lines.
I then lined up my tracery onto the next motif and traced around for the cut out lines.  I did that six times.

 

Now I just need to applique the parts to the background fabric and I'll be done!

STYLING

It took me two days to paper piece this cute little block from the Splendid Sampler series.  I picked out one of my paisley fabrics that I didn't think I could use in regular piecing - it's a border print.  

It was fun and frustrating both.  But very satisfying in the end.
