NORTHEAST EXCURSION - DAY 2

After getting breakfast and some supplies at the local Whole Foods Market in Portland, we headed north.

First stop, was to make a short visit with a fellow woodworker in his studio in Brunswick, Kevin Rodel.  His shop is in a converted factory, which now houses retail, office and workshops.

Great building.

There are hardwood floors throughout

Interesting halls and throughfares.

We left Kevin after a nice visit and headed north on Hwy 1.  It was a very pleasant drive winding through little villages.  Along the way we stopped at a quilt store just a few miles off the main highway.  (See next post).

And we also stopped at Lie Nielsen, which Kevin had told us was right on our way.

We made it to Rockland where we had lunch at a restaurant on the water, The Landings.  We had to have lobster, so the only thing that was gf was Lobster Risotto, which we both ordered - it left something to be desired.

We had to touch the Atlantic Ocean before we headed inland.
We left the coast and headed inland, our next stop the capitol, Augusta, where we toured the State House.

After a nice tour of the capital building we continued through Maine, with a few stops along the way to enjoy the scenery.

Then we headed into New Hampshire, where we spent the night in Gorham, arriving just as the sun was setting.

NORTHEAST EXCURSION - DAY 1

Darrell is scheduled to teach a workshop in Rochester NY, so we decided to make a short vacation of it and tour the Northeast to see the fall colors.
We left SeaTac early Monday morning, flew into Newark, NJ, where we laid over for our short hop to Portland Maine.  This is the first time either of us had been in NJ.

We had several hours to wait in very small Terminal A, so we ate lunch and I sketched for a while.

Pen and watercolor sketch.

The first bird I was in Maine, in the airport.

We picked up our rental car and headed to our hotel, La Quinta in Portland.  The gals that checked us in recommended a few restaurants and we headed out for dinner.  After walking around a bit we settled on Ri Ra, an Irish pub on Commercial Street, next to the water.  Darrell had Bangers and Mash, I had GF Fish and Chips.

SCISSORS TO GO

After doing some research on the google machine, I think I've determined that I can take scissors on an airplane if the blades are less than 3".

I found some scissors on Amazon that say they are TSA approved.  The blades are very short and the tips are rounded.  I considered buying children's scissors, but I'm pretty sure they are not sharp enough to cut thread.  And I only need them to cut thread on this trip.  So, I ordered the somewhat expensive real scissors made for airplane travel.  ($22 with tax).  It will be very annoying if they get confiscated.  I thought about having a stamped-self-addressed padded envelope ready just in case, but wasn't sure if I'd have to get out of line and run back into the airport to mail them and then get back in the security line, or what.  So I decided against it.

I was really pleased when I discovered the scissors will fit into my Altoids box that I use.  It has a magnetic square fitted to the bottom so my pins and needles will stay inside - and it's metal.

The scissors are made by Heritage Cutlery and you can buy them here.

Great scissors - very sharp.

I'm working on Katja Marek's Hexagon project, which is very easy to take along.  It's all English Paper Piecing - the pieces are sewn together by hand.
I prepared a bunch of blocks to take with me.  The fabrics are choosen and glue-basted to the paper pieces.  Each different block is in it's own baggie.  I have more than enough to keep me busy all week.

Then I put everything into a quart sized baggie and it's all in my carry-on backpack.

Here we go.

BONUS BLOCK 9

After I got it sewed together, I noticed I had the triangle segments turned the wrong way.  So, technically this is not Bonus Block 9, its something altogether different.

Oh, well.

IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM

Darrell got a little booboo on his finger and I met him at the emergency room.  I had lots and lots of time to sketch...

He will be fine in a few weeks.  Three stitches and a splint.

Unfortunately, I left my watercolors in a different bag.
