ROOTED #4

 I started this project a long while back.  This is Rooted by Sue Spargo.  I bought the kit with all of the wool and thread included, plus the instruction booklet.  I already had her little book about the embroidery stitches I would need to complete the project.

After making a few blocks, I set this project aside over a year ago.  I picked it back up a few days ago and it was exactly as I left it.  Everything was still all together, too.

I finished the last of the embroidery today.  Block #4 is done.  Now onto #5.

FINE FEATHERED FRIENDS

 I fused some black wool onto the back of the wool piece I've been working the birds onto.  This will hide the knots from the applique stitches and decorative embroidery on the front.  After it cooled I cut the birds out leaving a quarter inch outline around each.  I decided the legs were wrong on the wren, so I will need to unpick them and re-stitch them before I cut it out.

They all still need to have a blanket stitch stitched around the outside and a ribbon or string attached which to hang them with.

SNOW GLOBE ORNAMENT

 I made a Snow Globe ornament for the granddaughter Victoria.  She has been collecting them since she was young - real ones, not felt ornaments.

I got this pattern from whatacurlylife.com along with some more Christmas themed ornament patterns.

I gave it to her today when we went to her and her mother's place for Thanksgiving dinner. And a good dinner it was.

GNOMES

 I saw one of these in a local yarn shop and stole the idea.  I made these guys today.  The tall one is abuot 5" high.

BIRD LEGS

 I've been working on the Fine Feathered Friends wool embroidery project.  I've appliqued all of the pieces down and today I embroidered the legs onto the birds.

OFF TO PORT TOWNSEND

 Darrell, Jelly and I left early headed to Port Townsend.  Darrell is going to Edensaw to pick some lumber for our front gate project.

We caught the ferry from Fauntleroy to Southworth.  The sun was coming up behind us while we were on the ferry.

I dropped Darrell off at Edensaw.  Then Jelly and I headed to Fort Worden for a walk.  It was a beautiful morning.

Then we went back to retrieve Darrell and we headed to Water Street in Port Townsend.  We had a few minutes to kill before anything opened at 10am.  We walked up the street and back enjoying the old buildings and window displays.

I wanted to make a quick stop in the Art Toolkit Store.  I have a couple of their watercolor palettes and needed a few tiny pans.   I forgot to take pictures of the store though.

Then we went back to Bazaar Girls yarn and wool store that I had spotted on our walk.  I bought some felted wools and a pin kit and spotted a few things for inspiration.

FINISHED LITTLE OWL

 I finished putting together the Little Owl.  I used some of Grandma Jennie's buttons for the eyes.  

It's done and I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it.  For now, it will sit up on the top shelf and watch over things.

LITTLE OWL

 I bought Ann Wood's pattern for her Little Owls.  I started making the medium-sized one today.  I'm using some wool I bought at Carriage Country Quilts the other day.  I put some crushed walnut shell in the bottom to give it stability and then stuffed the rest with wool.  It still needs some embroidery and some eyes!

PEGASUS/BARS QUILT IS FINISHED

 I trimmed the batting and cut the backing to one inch.  I rolled the backing up and over the front and top stitched it down on the three sides.

The top, with the batik fabric, I had made longer so I could fold it down and create a 'chin guard'.  Afterwards, I thought it needed tying because I had doubled the batting inside to make it as thick as the rest of the quilt.

I think I want to wash it now and see what happens.

My quilt has no label - that's the first time I've not put a label on one of my quilts.

I made this as a replica of the orginal, found in Roderick Kiracofe's book Unconventional and Unexpected Quilts.

FINISHED TYING

 I got the last of the tying done on the Pegasus/Bars quilt and removed it from the longarm.

I'm not sure how I'm going to finish the edges - binding or facing or ???

LOADED PEGASUS/BARS ON LONGARM

I loaded the Pegasus/Bars quilt onto the longarm even though I'm going to tie it.  I figured it would be easier to do that there instead of on a table or the floor.  (I'm too old to get down on the floor anymore).

So this is an all wool top, wool batting and a cotton backing.  I'm going to use Wonderfil Eleganza Perle cotton #8 thread, doubled, to tie it.  I made a little template to try to keep the stitching even and straight.  After sewing a few rows by hand I began to think I'm spacing the lines too close!  This is going to take a while.

It looks like I won't have enough of that color, so I'm going to use several different colors.  And, my hand is tired.

NOT HAPPY WITH QUILTING

 I really don't like the way the quilting on the Sunrise quilt is looking.

I made the difficult decision to take it all out and start over.

It's too 'puffy' and it detracts from the curves in the piecing.  It may be the wool batting, so I may use cotton instead.

But, anyway, it all needs to come out.

INSPIRED BY PEGASUS BARS QUILT

I saw this improv quilt on Quiltfolk's Month 2 of Break the Rules.  Kirocofe talked about it and I was inspired to make a copy of it. This quilt is made of pieced strips and scraps of different materials.  On the opposite side is a flag showing Pegasus.

I got out my wools, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I had, plenty enough to make this project. I will have to look through my horse fabric collection to see if I have a Pegasus.

I got three of the bars made today.

THREE DIMENSIONAL

 I cut the gusset for the 'horse' from some black wool yardage I had purchased with some intent a while back (but I didn't follow through with that project).

I sewed the two halves of the horse together, leaving an opening for stuffing.

I purchased some wool stuffing, it should be here next week.
